New Zealand Introduces Short-term Graduate Work Visa from November 2026

Eligible international graduates who completed study in New Zealand can now apply for this new visa, providing 6 months of open work rights.

Duration – 6 months open work rights

Funds required – Minimum NZD $5,000 available

Work type – Employment or contract — no business ownership

Limit – One grant per person — not extendable

Eligibility requirements

Hold a qualification at NZQCF Level 5–7, studied full-time for at least 24 weeks in New Zealand

Qualification is not an English language, foundation, or bridging programme

Qualification does not make you eligible for a Post Study Work Visa

Have not previously held a Short-term Graduate Work Visa or Post Study Work Visa

Valid medical certificate and chest X-ray (where required based on intended length of stay)

Written MFAT or Education New Zealand approval (if study was under the NZ Scholarship Programme)

Applications must be submitted within 3 months of your New Zealand student visa expiring.
