Important Update for Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) Applicants

English Language Requirements Extended to AEWV Skill Level 3 Roles

Immigration New Zealand has announced that from 1 June 2026, minimum English language requirements will apply to all ANZSCO Skill Level 3 occupations under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).

Previously, English language requirements applied to Skill Level 4 and 5 occupations. Under the new changes, applicants for Skill Level 3 roles will also need to demonstrate English language proficiency.

What Does This Mean?

Applicants applying for an AEWV in a Skill Level 3 occupation will be required to meet the same English language standards currently applied to Skill Level 4 and 5 occupations.

The required English level is intended to demonstrate basic, everyday communication skills needed for work and daily life in New Zealand. It is not considered an advanced level of English.

Applicants may be able to meet the requirement through:

  • Citizenship from an accepted English-speaking country
  • Previous study completed in English
  • Recognised English language test results
  • Other evidence accepted by Immigration New Zealand

Exemptions Available

An exemption may apply to individuals who:

  • Hold an AEWV that expires on or before 1 December 2026, and
  • Apply for another AEWV in a Skill Level 3 occupation before their current visa expires.

Eligible applicants may be contacted directly by Immigration New Zealand with further guidance.

What Should Employers and Applicants Do?

If you are planning to apply for an AEWV under a Skill Level 3 occupation, it is important to review the new English language requirements early and ensure you have the necessary supporting evidence before lodging your application.
